(Dennis) William Dring, RA, RWS, RP (1904-1990) was a very well known painter of portraits and landscapes in oil, watercolour and pastel. He was born in London, his younger brother being the painter James Dring. William Dring studied at the Slade School under Henry Tonks 1922-25. He met and married his fellow artist Elizabeth Rothwell who was the model for many of his paintings and drawings. During World War II Dring was an official war artist and his work is represented in the Imperial War Museum.
William Dring was elected ARA in 1944 and a full member of the Royal Academy in 1955. He was also a member of the prestigious Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He had a number of Royal commissions including painting the christening of HRH Prince Charles the Prince of Wales. In 1990 Agnew’s held a major retrospective exhibition of his work which unfortunately he was unable to attend due to illness.
